Edge Computing 2020 – Datamation

Edge computing, the emerging technology that process data at the “edge” of the network, is growing rapidly. Crunching data at the edge is faster than sending it back to the data center for processing, and allows greater real time responsiveness. Edge computing goes hand in hand with technologies like cloud computing, AI, data analytics, and – especially – the Internet of Things. IoT is a huge growth driver for edge computing.

But according to a recent Forester report, edge computing will far transcend these drivers, enabling real time edge computing to drive real-time app engagement like never before. Emerging deployments of 5G technology are expected to prompt exponential growth in edge computing.

To provide insight into the explosive growth of edge computing, I spoke with a leading expert, Abhijit Sunil, analyst with Forrester Research. Abhijit recently co-authored a report, Predictions 2020: Edge Computing.
